The Golden Age of Hollywood

Our member Joanne forwarded me an article that states that Ning will no longer be offering FREE service. If this is true, which I believe it is, then GAOH will be closing down. Not only can I not afford to pay for service to keep GAOH going but I'm unwilling to hassle with soliciting funds to keep it going. So, if you come by one day soon and GAOH is gone then you will know why. Here is the link to the article:

I can contribute 5 dollars for now but I am uneasy with the concept of the few paying for the many, and the seeming inequity of that. I also do not trust Ning at this point, as they changed their terms once, it seems to me that they could do that again - hopefully not, of course. If this is now going to become a paid for site, then it would also be nice if members became more active here - so many of the groups and discussions just die here, over and over, and while I love all the wonderful photos, I personally feel the site needs to be a lot more active in other areas. How to make that happen, I really don't know? But it would not be fun to pay for something and have it continue to be so eerily quiet.

I'll gladly help contribute, but at the moment having just ordered a expensive item for my Sister last week, my Paypal account is down to next to nothing. I'll have to wait until I have some additional funds in my account. Not sure how soon that will be.

Kevin, I agree I think Pay Pal contributions would be the way to go, especially since everyone knows now it's contribute or lose the GOAH. I would be willing to contribute $20.

What I am considering doing is adding a PayPal link on the main page. However, the link will remain only until the goal of $199 is reached and we have enough contributions to pay for the year in full. (I would rather pay the year up front than to go monthly. It does save 16%) If we don't have the amount needed by July when Ning pulls the plug I will contribute the balance and leave the PayPal link up. If we get the full amount though the link will come down until a month before next years renewal. I believe right now we have ten weeks to raise the money. If we can pay for the service by June that would be great but if we have to go through to July that will be OK too.

I'm not exactly sure why some members feel that donations is the wrong way to go. Nobody is making you contribute a single dollar to keeping GAOH on Ning. If someone wants to give it's out of the kindness of their heart and their love for the site. If we had 100 members who could give only $2.00 once a year it would keep us going. We're not asking for a monthly contribution. Only a one time, once a year gift to keep us from having to move.

If we move to another site we have to start again. Not only that, but we have no guarantees that the next site will remain or that they won't want to start charging in the future also. And there we would be all over again, trying to find another home. Yes, there are free options but as far as I can see not one of those free options are as good as Ning.

Thanks to everyone who has offered to make a donation thus far. It's encouraging to know that there are members willing to help keep GAOH here!

I believe 10 members at $20 will expedite, while donations from other members trickle in.
As I suggested previously, the lower amounts to be paid by those who can not afford more than $5bucks
could be applied as an offset to main contributors for following year.

I'm ready to pay anytime. I think members should volunteer asap rather than having Kevin try to round us up. Also, a deadline for the money by money order or thru paypal. paypal has given me trouble in the past,
so I would rather send a foolproof postal money order to a PO box or address.

I would certainly pay $10 a month or whatever though I think it would be better if a different person/s paid each month. You could I suppose make a list of people (volunteers) to pay say $10 you would need 20 to cover a year.

I don't think any one person should pay for a full year while I appreciate your generosity Kevin that wouldn't be fair. I'm unconvinced getting the money would be at all straightforward and I'm uneasy that a few would in effect be paying for many. It might be worth asking all the members if they would contribute.

As for other options Spruz is not perfect its not Ning doesn't have all the customization options in the free version its true and there are the storage limits but I for one have found nothing better unless you can set up Elgg on your server. There is a free option there we would just have to work within those constraints.

If we can get the money required to stay on Ning and people are fine with that so am I. Time I think to ask all the members.

I am in agreement with Christopher. I also agree with Mike. I would be
happy to contribute $20 but that would be my limit, sorry. At the moment
our employment is good but I don't know how I will be placed next year.

I'll do $5 or $10 easily...if its paypal...

I have already set up a page on several other networks and so far I do not like any of them as much as Ning. We would not need to the largest plan to to keep GAOH on Ning. The plan that would work for us is only $19.95 a month or $199 a year. You get a little savings by purchasing the full year. I think Spruz sucks as a platform Another network I am on moved to Spruz and they are actually paying more for a crappy network than they would have if they had waited to see what Ning was going to charge. I'm willing to pay $10.00 a month to keep the site on Ning. So, all we really need is another $100 in total membership donations to keep the site here. That's only ten members helping out with $10.00 each or 20 members with $5.00.

I am still looking into the possibility of setting up Elgg on my own server but it's more involved than I thought. The easiest thing for us to do is either stay and ask for some help financially to keep GAOH on Ning or find a better platform than the ones offered thus far.
