Great Entertainers

They were more than movie actors, they also conquered the stage, the airwaves and the jukeboxes. They were all round musical performers like Sinatra, Jolson, Garland, Crosby, Astaire, Armstrong, Fitzgerald : they were the Great Entertainers.

Profile Information

What are your favorite movies?
My favorite movies are "Holiday" from 1938, "Broadway Serenade" from 1939, the Dr. Kildare movie series from 1938-1942, and "Night World" from 1932. I have a special affection for 1930s films, but I love all Code films sealed by Mr. Breen (between 1934 and 1954).
Who are your favorite stars?
My favorite actors are Lew Ayres, James Cagney, Nelson Eddy, Jack Lemmon, James Stewart, Bing Crosby, and Fred Astaire. My favorite actresses are Jeanette MacDonald, Laraine Day, Eleanor Powell, Kathryn Grayson, Mae Clarke, Audrey Hepburn, and Kathryn Hepburn.
Who are your favorite directors?
My favorite directors are George Cukor, W. S. Van Dyke, and Richard Quine. I like all directors who knew how to make brilliant, believable films without breaking the Code.
About Me: Tell us about yourself/or your love for classic movies
I have watched old movies all my life. I have never watched any movies except those from the Golden Era of Hollywood. My love for old movies eventually led me to discover the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 and the amazing impact it had on Hollywood and America. As I learned more about it, I began to love it more and more. In October of 2016, my sister and I started the Pure Entertainment Preservation Society, an organization specifically dedicated to bringing back the Code and celebrating old, beautiful entertainment. I love the 1930s very much. They are my favorite time in Hollywood history. I celebrate the whole true Code era, which is from 1934 to 1954, when Joseph I. Breen was the head of the Production Code Administration. He is my favorite film contributor because he was a moral, talented man who kept films clean and glorious for everyone. I have been deeply influenced by the Code era and old entertainment. I never leave the house without an vintage-style dress or skirt and hat. I live my life like it is a Code film.

To view Perfect Understanding click here. In 1929, after a successful career in silent film and at the height of her popularity, Gloria Swanson was preparing for her transition to “talkies,” the earliest, raw experiments in bringing sound to motion pictures. Her sound debut was in the 1929 drama written and directed by Edmund Goulding, The […]

To view Burden of Dreams click here. “If I abandon this project I would be a man without dreams and I don’t want to live like that. I live my life or I end my life with this project.” That’s how Werner Herzog responded to his investors in Germany asking him if he had the will […]
