About Me: Tell us about yourself/or your love for classic movies

I've always loved old, classic films- I grew up watching them. The clothes, styles, stories, music, dancing, characters...What a wonderful and exciting world! They were so intense, so beautiful, so fascinating to me. I wanted to do the same things they were doing-
Wear the same clothes, live in the same houses, travel on trains & ocean liners, dining and dancing, cocktails and cigarettes...I was mesmerized by every bit of it.
There's nothing better than watching old movies.
They're really a great form of therapy.
I still love to escape into that world, and live those lives-
if only for a little while...what a marvelous gift they left us!

Classic Film Stars: Perfection or Photoshopped?

It seems like every few months, some photoshopped before and after of a magazine cover gets leaked- or simply shown on the photographer themselves web site. The wonder (and sometimes horror) of retouched photos is an element of our culture that we need constant… Continue

Hooray (?!) for Hollywood

Posted on August 19, 2009 at 11:37pm 1 Comment

It's fascinating to look at the Best Actress Oscar categories over the decades...seeing what kind of archetypes, stereotypes, professions, (or lack thereof) the leading actresses portrayed. Since movies are such cultural barometers, there are definitely some interesting trends to observe. Looking at 10 year intervals, starting from 1938 to 2008- I’ll list the nominees, and briefly describe the woman’s role in the film. The first name in… Continue

Admiration For Ms. deHavilland, Etc...

Posted on August 16, 2009 at 11:00pm 5 Comments

I have so much repect for Ms. de Havilland. She's lived her life in such a dignified, graceful way.

She'll always be 'Melanie' to me- but she really had a wide range of acting ability. She didn't stay in a safe-zone, only playing 'Melanie' type roles- which could have happened after the success of GWTW.

Some of my favorite films/roles of hers are very Un-Melanie-Like!...

'The Dark Mirror'

'Lady In A Cage'

Affairs of the Heart: The Wedding Night (1935)

To view The Wedding Night click here. The Wedding Night was doomed from the start. It was producer Samuel Goldwyn’s final attempt at making the Ukrainian actress Anna Sten into a Garbo-level star, and his persistence had become something of a Hollywood joke. The Wedding Night became known around town as “Goldwyn’s Last Sten,” but […]

Murnau and the Phantoms of Germany

To view Phantom click here. It’s that time of year when Nosferatu (1922), F.W. Murnau’s interpretation of Dracula, appears on lists of recommended horror films. The oldest, existing film version of Bram Stoker’s novel, Nosferatu is likely Murnau’s most watched title. It’s eerie Expressionist style was a major influence on the American horror genre, but […]
