my favorite Olivia de Havilland film has to be It's Love I'm After followed by The Snake Pit.
It's Love I'm After is hilarious and it is because of Olivia she was so damn cute! i like a lot of her earlier roles like this one and Four's a Crowd where she plays the silly, light, girly characters. while Leslie Howard and Bette Davis were over the top Olivia kept as contained as her character allowed her.
every time i watch The Snake Pit i cannot get over how amazing she was. back then it was almost a sin for the studio to not make their top actresses appear less than perfect on the screen so for Olivia to get into a character that had such a problem and have her hair looked like she hadn't taken a shower in days just proves what a fantastic actress she was. her performance just blows me away.
and of course i love Olivia as Melanie from Gone with the Wind. Melanie is a great character and Olivia was perfection.
Great discussion question Film Fanatic. My fave dramatic film of Olivia is The Snake Pit as well. Just an amazing performance by Olivia in that one. Is it my favorite overall film of hers. Ummm..I would have to go with The Adventures of Robin Hood..perfect escapist film and marvelous chemistry between her and Errol. I too liked her in those light comedies she did..along with It's Love I'm After, I also like Princess O'Rourke, The Strawberry Blonde and Government Girl. Olivia is awesome!
Mine is the first movie I saw her in - Gone With the Wind. Olivia played the perfect Melanie. While I appriciate the fact that Hattie McDaniel was the first actress or actor to win an Acting award with Gone With the WInd, and that it was a great achivement for her race (which is still underrepresented in the FIlm Industry, as far as awards and directing positions go), I think that de Havilland gave a better performance, and I kind of wish she would of got the Oscar.
oh my god i totally forgot about Olivia's role in The Strawberry Blonde!! she cracked me up so much especially when she first met James Cagney and was trying to act all tough haha.
and i forgot about The Adventures of Robin Hood!!! that was the first time i ever saw the lovely lady in a film. what a fantastic film she and Errol Flynn were absolute perfection.
i just got through watching To Each His Own and i cried. Olivia completely deserved the Oscar for this role. i was so heartbroken for her.
Kenzie i will absolutely agree with you that i do appreciate the fact that Hattie McDaniel won for Gone With the Wind and what it did for her race. she was excellent as Mammy there is absolutely no doubt about that, she had some of the best scenes of the film but Olivia does give the better performance. i can argue both points how either actress deserved the award or not just based on their character bc their performances were brilliant but i'll leave that to debate another time.
