I've got a blog about WWII Hollywood - hollywoodatwar.blogspot.com - and am curious as to what Stanwyck's experiences were during the War. Does anyone know?

I had never seen "early" Barbara (The Purchase Price, Baby Face, The Miracle Woman) until a few years ago. Wow, what I had been missing. Her hard boiled, take-no-prisoners persona was knock out. Don't get me wrong, I still like Stella Dallas, Christmas in Connecticutt and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, I can just appreciate those roles more seeing the earlier, rawer Stanwyck.

I think when it came to sheer sexiness, Stanwyck had them all beat. She oozed it in films like BALL OF FIRE and DOUBLE INDEMNITY just by her walk and her eyes.

I personally think when William Holden strayed away from the script at the Oscars to say what he thought of Stanwyck was one of the most touching moments they ever had there.

Saw her in one of my favorite westerns, The Violent Men, a few days ago. Evil incarnate she was, and darned good at it.

How anyone can overlook this suberb actress is beyond me. This woman was the original femme fatale and the one of the greatest tough-as-nails leading ladies.

Hi All, I don't know how come I missed this group because Barbara Stanwyck is my favourite classic era actress. Always has been and as I continue to see more and more of her films I have not changed my view.

I've never thought of Stanwyck as beautiful, but in films like The Lady Eve or Ball of Fire, she had scenes where she was as sexy as anyone ever was, bar none. My stars!

Affairs of the Heart: The Wedding Night (1935)

To view The Wedding Night click here. The Wedding Night was doomed from the start. It was producer Samuel Goldwyn’s final attempt at making the Ukrainian actress Anna Sten into a Garbo-level star, and his persistence had become something of a Hollywood joke. The Wedding Night became known around town as “Goldwyn’s Last Sten,” but […]

Murnau and the Phantoms of Germany

To view Phantom click here. It’s that time of year when Nosferatu (1922), F.W. Murnau’s interpretation of Dracula, appears on lists of recommended horror films. The oldest, existing film version of Bram Stoker’s novel, Nosferatu is likely Murnau’s most watched title. It’s eerie Expressionist style was a major influence on the American horror genre, but […]
