The Golden Age of Hollywood

I don’t know if this has already been discussed (if so I apologize) but I thought it would be fun to discuss everybody’s favourite hollywood actor from the golden era and why?
Mine is Marilyn Monroe though I’m pretty sure the mass majority favors her. (Not saying EVERYBODY loves her though)
Besides her I love Shirley Temple! She grew up to be an amazing woman and I adore her dearly.

Who’s yours?

John Wayne, Cary Grant, William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Myrna Loy, Greer Garson, Lillian Gish.

Hello Jenni! I have many, but will list a few. Barbara Stanwyck is my fave. Loved her attitude. I love tough and determined personality.
James Stewart.
Gregory Peck
Ingrid Bergman

I love Marilyn, too, although her heyday was a little later than the period I'm most interested in, film-wise.

My favorite actor is Jean Arthur. She played mostly comedic roles, which she was very good at, not because she had a funny or wisecracking persona, but because she was so good at playing an ordinary, good person placed in the middle of ridiculous or extraordinary events and reacting as any normal person would, but with great sensitivity to comedic timing. She tended to play intelligent, practical, working women, and to my recollection never played a society girl. If she did, it must have been early in her career, perhaps in one of her early mysteries (I havent seen all of her movies). Jean was someone ordinary people could relate to. She also had that adorable squeak in her voice, which she could completely control, as demonstrated in a scene in Easy Living in which she has to lie, and her stress shows in the squeak. The only other actor I know of who could do that was Melvyn Douglas.

Jean played in many screwball comedies (my favorite film genre) and was a favorite of Frank Capra. She starred in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and You Can't Take It With You.

Do you own the Comedy and the Drama collections from TCM? If you do how is the quality of the transfers?

Jean Harlow, Mary Dees, and SARATOGA

I watched SARATOGA again last night for the first time in years and still found it very depressing. It is so sad to watch Harlow, clearly weak and listless, playing each scene when you know how sick she is. And every time I saw her double Mary Dees’ back turned to the camera, all I […]

Man’s Castle 1933

Embarrassed to say but I just watched Frank Borzage’s Man’s Castle for the first time this week. Wow, what a movie! Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young are both excellent but the way the movie plows headlong into the plight of desperate people during the despression is remarkable. There are some obvious hard cuts in the movie […]

How’s It Going, Everybody?

Every now and then I stop back in to look at some of the updated comments and I’m surprised, and gladdened, to see that there still are comments! Now, I no longer get paid to post here so this is just a “Hi, how are you?” to everyone who still comments here (so don’t freak […]
