The Golden Age of Hollywood

I thought it might be fun to see what everyone is purchasing these days. And please do NOT feel like you need to limit your response to just classic films. As a matter of fact my last purchase was not a classic film at all but the latest Stargate SG1 movie called ARK OF TRUTH. It was quite good and any Stargate fan would probably appreciate the film. I must say that I also bought the soundtrack for the film and in this rare occasion I love the soundtrack more than the film.

So, what was your latest DVD purchase or purchases?

I just ordered The Shaggy Dog. I like having a bunch of feel good movies from my childhood around when I need a good pick-me-up. Shortly before that I bought The Parent Trap. I haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but I'm looking forward to it!

Most of my collection is feel-good movies. I just ordered a portable DVD player, as my last one died several years ago. I am so much looking forward to watching movies in bed again. That is the ultimate coziness! I can't wait till it arrives.

Here is an excel spreadsheet listing all my movies. Quite a few dupes it does not list all of my Amazon online movies or Google movies I have purchased.

I couldn't see the spreadsheet.

I'm so excited - I just tracked my package, and my portable DVD player will be arriving today, not tomorrow! I have been saving my two new DVDs to watch in bed on this player.

I finally got North by Northwest on blu-ray this week. It's fantastic! If you only had to get one classic film that you already own in another format it would surely have to be this one. Highly recommended.

What movies did people get for Xmas? I got a boxed set of George Arliss comedies that includes Old English, A Successful Calamity, and The King's Vacation, all from the early 30s. I have seen A Successful Calamity so far and loved it. I also got an Irene Dunne screwball comedy I've never seen, Lady in a Jam. Really looking forward to watching it!

In addition, I got some newer films. Galaxy Quest was on sale for $3.99 at Best Buy, so I couldn't resist. I also ordered Tim (a very unusual romance starring Piper Laurie and a young Mel Gibson), and from my mom I got Risky Business and Going in Style. She picked them up at a bargain somewhere.

Unfortunately we have spent so much money replacing appliances, building a tiled shower, enclosing our patio, painting etc. our new home in Tennessee that I didn't get any DVDs this year.

Me neither...but since I have every movie on DVD that has won the Best Picture Oscar, I'll probably buy, at least, one DVD next year.

Unlike several of the other winners these past few years, I hope it's a film I'd like to watch more than once.

I haven't even seen most of the Best Picture Oscars.  Michael, you must have close to 90 DVDs just in that part of your collection!

Have read the book, Tim by Colleen McCulloch.  Very good.  And Mel is great in the movie with Piper Laurie.

I got myself another "upgrade" recently, this time Laura on blu-ray. More than anything it provided me with a reason to enjoy one of the finest films of the 40's for the fifth or sixth time I would say! Hats off to technology... and dear old Clifton Webb of course, "Insipid, I trust" Not at all!

Jean Harlow, Mary Dees, and SARATOGA

I watched SARATOGA again last night for the first time in years and still found it very depressing. It is so sad to watch Harlow, clearly weak and listless, playing each scene when you know how sick she is. And every time I saw her double Mary Dees’ back turned to the camera, all I […]

Man’s Castle 1933

Embarrassed to say but I just watched Frank Borzage’s Man’s Castle for the first time this week. Wow, what a movie! Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young are both excellent but the way the movie plows headlong into the plight of desperate people during the despression is remarkable. There are some obvious hard cuts in the movie […]

How’s It Going, Everybody?

Every now and then I stop back in to look at some of the updated comments and I’m surprised, and gladdened, to see that there still are comments! Now, I no longer get paid to post here so this is just a “Hi, how are you?” to everyone who still comments here (so don’t freak […]
